What is home to you

What is home to you?

When people aged 0-100 were asked what home meant to them, their answers ranged from the conventional to the abstract. “Home – where I was born and raised,” “holidays,” “memories” and so on. What better way to capture those precious memories than photography?

Home is an irrevocable condition

Borrowing the words of James Baldwin, perhaps home is not merely a place, it is an unalterable association – with a person, a place, an object, or for that matter, ourselves. We often connect the idea of a home with someone or something that becomes a source of our happiness and a safe space. Our relationship with them might change or evolve over the years, but the reality of this association remains in our lives.

Where is your home?

When people ask you about your home, do you have a single answer or do you think of multiple places? Is it the house that you grew up in or the city that you spent your childhood in? Have you maybe started to feel at ‘home’ in your college dorm? Perhaps, there is only one ultimate homethe rest, are mere illusions, temporary substitutes.

Or if you were to listen to Miriam Adeney, you will never be completely at home again, because part of your heart will always be elsewhere. That is the price you pay for knowing and loving people in more than one place. The world is your home.

What feeling do you associate with home?

The Covid-19 pandemic gave a whole new dimension to this question—living at our houses for extended periods, locked away from others. Even then, it essentially added to the primary feelings we associate with home, that of warmth, comfort, and security. A home is a place that makes us feel loved and protected—a small cocoon that shelters us from the harshness of the outside.

Home is where you entrust your sleep and dream freely. It is where you find rest after a long day at work, where you enjoy a peaceful dinner. It is the satisfaction you feel after hearing the laughs of the ones you love. Home feels like it isand always will bethere for you.

What is your favorite memory about home?

Is it the early hours of the Christmas morning, when you can hear the birds chirping and the retreating footsteps of Santa after having filled all the stockings generously? The smell of hot cocoa and the shine of the gift wrappers added to the magic of the day?

Or is it the garden swing that you sat on for hours at a stretch, talking to the wind without a care in the world? Or the kitchen table where you had conversations with your mother over a cup of coffee for you and tea for her?

Or is it the glow of those city lights, sparkling against the dark sky from that quiet spot that is only yours? Or walking in that abandoned citadel with a handful of your friends that someone discovered by chance on one such evening?

How lovely would it be to relive all these moments! To look at yourself living in them!

Or are you still searching for a home?

Are you among the vagabonds who are perpetually in search of a home or rather, who find their home in movement, in traveling to different places? The world is your home, quite literally. You can’t stay rooted in one space. Because how do you choose between one home and another? So, you leave one to find the multiple others that await your presence.

In this case, capturing yourself in those spaces becomes even more significantto keep the experience of being at home at that particular point in time alive. Travel photography no longer remains only a medium to document your journey, it becomes a means to retrieve its essence when you are longing for home.

Commemorate your affection!

Whatever be the definition of your home, it is never the wrong time to celebrate it. And what better way to do that than capture them in their aesthetic? It is always a delight to have a tangible form of a memory we cherish, be it a souvenir from a trip or an old movie ticket. Why not do the same for what you associate with home?
